Who We Are

Being Disciples of Christ

DisciplesChalice iconWHO ARE DISCIPLES?
We are Disciples of Christ, a movement for wholeness in a fragmented world. As part of the one body of Christ, we welcome all to the Lord’s Table as God has welcomed us.”
- Disciples of Christ Identity Statement

First Christian Church celebrates being a congregation in covenant partnership with the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ).

We Trust You
As Disciples of Christ, we have no creed. We take our faith seriously, and we encourage each and every person to weigh scripture and tradition, reason and experience and then act out their faith with compassion and justice.

We trust you to travel your own faith journey and to read, study and grow on your own terms. And, we trust Jesus to show us truth and goodness.

We Love You
When Jesus was asked what mattered most, he said to love God and love others. Everything he tells his disciples is rooted in this love. That’s why we focus on how to love God and our neighbor. We engage in study, worship, prayer and service.

From gathering backpacks and school supplies for community children in need to serving dinners at the Gathering Place; from gleaning excess vegetables at Evans Orchard to providing blankets through Church World Services; our congregation is focused on making the world a better place.

We Include You
First Christian Church is an Open & Affirming Congregation, meaning that every person is welcomed and encouraged to participate fully in the life of the church. This means we practice unity and inclusion for everything from communion to worship participation and preaching, from leadership to employment, from birth to senior adult. You are invited to participate with us in worship, Sunday School, prayer time, Wednesday evening activities, outreach projects, fellowship events, and any other way we gather.

We Practice Communion
The Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) believes that the communion table is an extension of God's love. We celebrate communion every Sunday and you are welcome to participate with us without exception. The Table is not the table of First Christian Church, it is Christ's table, and Christ invites you.

We Celebrate Our Heritage
First Christian Church is a congregation deeply connected to the Disciples of Christ history. Our church was once served by one of the original founders of the DOC movement, Barton Warren Stone. In 2016, we celebrated 200 years of faithful discipleship and service to the Georgetown community and the Kentucky Region.

Our practices, our beliefs, our history, and our people are continually shaping who we are. We are more than an institution or denomination; we are a movement for God’s peace, justice, and love.
