Working Together for Community Wellness
The congregation of First Christian Church is dedicated to making the world a better place, more filled the wellness God wants for all God’s children and creation itself. We do that through service with our home community of Georgetown and Scott County as well as through national and global initiatives. As we serve with the community, we find ourselves transformed as well. No matter what your interests are, we hope that you will find a way to serve at First Christian Church.
Refugee Ministry
In the past 15 years, First Christian has helped with the resettlement process of 5 different refugee families, working independently and through Kentucky Refugee Ministries. This work has included providing and furnishing an apartment, providing food & clothing, and financial and relational support.
The Gathering Place offers shelters in Scott County for men and women experiencing homelessness. First Christian Church participates with The Gathering Place mission in a variety of ways. In additional to financial support, we also take donations for needed items such as warm winter items, air mattresses, blankets, etc. as the need arises. We serve a meal at The Gathering Place’s Emmaus Kitchen once per quarter, with members donating food and participating in the serving of a meal on fifth Thursdays.
Since 2013, First Christian Church has rented the use of our former parsonage home to Elizabeth’s Village for only $1.00 a year. The home is used as their transitional home for single women and women with minor children. While there, they receive shelter, food, medical assistance, case management and education. First Christian Church has also offered support for ongoing needs as well.
Share the Harvest
Share the Harvest is FCC Georgetown’s joint mission with Evans Orchard. Their excess produce which would otherwise be composted, is transported every Tuesday and Friday during the growing season by FCC volunteers to the Gathering Place and Amen House where it is distributed to the community. During the late summer, when the harvest is overwhelming, members of the church community meet at Evans for gleaning days to harvest produce that would be otherwise left on the vine.
Twisted Trunk Community Garden
The community garden is a collaborative effort of FCC Georgetown, Georgetown Baptist Church, Green Christians Dinner Church, and Georgetown College. The garden is tended throughout the growing season and is open to the community to tend and harvest. Fruits, vegetables and flowers flourish there and portions are sometimes shared with The Gathering Place or the AMEN House as well.
Church World Service is a faith-based organization transforming communities around the globe through just and sustainable responses to hunger, poverty, displacement and disaster. FCC Georgetown supports Church World Services through “Blanket Sunday.” On Blanket Sunday, we collect funds to support CWS and provide needed items (including blankets) to those dealing with natural disaster and displacement.
Week of Compassion is the relief, refugee and development mission fund of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in the United States and Canada. FCC Georgetown is proud to take our support of Week of Compassion to the next level, by marking February of each year as our Month of Compassion. During this month we learn more about Week of Compassion and Church World Service and the work they do on our behalf and we celebrate with donations to both organizations.
The Amen House serves Scott County as a food pantry, thrift store, and more with the support of several churches and others in the community. FCC Georgetown also takes up an offering of food and money on the first Sunday of every month, with monetary donations going to the AMEN House. Donated food items are placed in the “Blessing Box” in front of the church on College Street, which is freely available to anyone in the community.
